Nemo is abducted by a boat and netted up and sent to a dentist's office in Sydney. While Marlin ventures off to try to retrieve Nemo, Marlin meets a fish named Dory, a blue tang suffering from short-term memory loss.

The companions travel a great distance, encountering various dangerous sea creatures such as sharks, anglerfish and jellyfish, in order to rescue Nemo from the dentist's office, which is situated by Sydney Harbour. While the two are searching the ocean far and wide, Nemo and the other sea animals in the dentist's fish tank plot a way to return to the sea to live their lives free again.

Top review. Swimming with Sharks is a Whale of a Time. Marlin, a nervous and neurotic clownfish is heavily overprotective of his son Nemo, who only wants to explore the sea in its entirety. When Nemo gets caught by a scuba diver and taken away, it is up to Marlin to swallow his own fears and find Nemo.

The ensuing search and rescue organized by the him is a mass effort by swimming and flying creatures of all sizes and personalities, such as a threesome of vegetarian sharks, a fish with short term memory and an aged turtle, all helping him realise the error of his ways in restricting himself to just his home. As charming as it is beautiful, Finding Nemo is a joy, both visually and cinematically.

The characters are all so appealing and sweet that you want to hug each and every one of them, Nemo and Dory in particular. But the film transcends above just a generic animated film, for there are lessons to be learnt by it too. The film often tells a children's tale from an adult's point of view, with risky situations and emotional soul-searching putting stress on a disjointed family. The sea is brought to us in such a memorable and unique way that there is brilliance and beauty in every frame.

The animation is of all time high for Pixar, and the sound mixing and editing are also to be credited, as they capture the heart of the sea creditably. But perhaps the best thing about the film is the musical score by Thomas Newman. He creates the essence of the sea, as well as the emotions felt by the fish throughout. Note the masterwork that occurs as an upbeat, jovial number quickly escalates into something darker in a matter of minutes.

Despite being born with a withered fin, Nemo yearns for adventure, and as fate takes him far from home, he learns he is capable of doing great things. Sheltered deep within The Great Barrier reef, safe inside his anemone home, lives Marlin. After losing his wife and family to the ocean, Marlin is left alone to raise his only surviving child, Nemo. He vows never to let anything happen to his son. When Nemo is suddenly taken away, Marlin must try to find in himself the courage, wisdom, and faith needed to search the unpredictable ocean to bring his boy home — the very characteristics he needs to allow his son to learn and grow.

Throughout the vast ocean you will not find a fish more hospitable, more friendly, or more sociable than Dory. Dory suffers from short term memory loss. Dory is the aquatic Good Samaritan who offers to help Marlin on his journey to find his son. She is certainly an odd partner for such a quest, but her optimism proves an invaluable quality to help Marlin overcome the impossible.

To Dory, the glass is always half-full. He is the leader of an eclectic gang of fish, who hang on his every word and are drawn to his magnetic personality. This tough, scarred, one-finned fish was raised in the ocean, but taken at a young age to live in a tank. Though he dreams of one day breaking out and returning to the ocean, his failed escape attempts have broken his spirit. With Nemo's arrival to the tank, Gill is inspired again to find a way back to the sea.

No matter where you're from—the ocean, eBay, Pet Palace, or mail order—being stuck in a kitschy dentist's aquarium can do things to a fish.

Led by escape artist Gill, Peach, Bloat, Gurgle, Deb, Bubbles, and Jacques make life livable with tiki-inspired tank rituals, all the while dreaming of getting back into the Big Blue. Bruce, Anchor and Chum are mates. Anchor is cynical; he hates dolphins. Bruce is the jolly leader of the pack. All three are members of a Fish-Eaters Anonymous Group, and are tormented by their natural urge to eat fish and their resulting unpopularity amongst the general ocean population.

Crush and his offspring Squirt know how to chill and go with the flow, especially the one created by the East Australian Current. The two have a righteous bond that's totally sweet. The one Marlin and Dory swam through was likely a submarine canyon , and not quite as deep. The sting of a jellyfish can be deadly — but maybe not for a prepared clownfish.

Jellyfish are in the same phylum as sea anemones, where clownfish make their home. Both jellyfish and sea anemones are cnidarians, classified as an organism with an opening with a ring of tentacles surrounding it.

If you want to get technical, jellyfish are in the medusa phase a free-swimming structure while anemones are in the polyp phase an attaching structure.

The layer of mucus on a clownfish that protects them from sea anemones could be what protected Marlin in the movie. In the movie, it looks like a type of warp-speed highway for aquatic life. The current on the east side of the Australian coast that flows in a southward direction from the Great Barrier Reef.

EAC transports more than 40 million cubic meters of water each second. As for fish "riding" the EAC the way they do in the movie, some scientists say they have seen tropical fish "hitching a ride" on the current , though it is not quite as fast as it appears in the movie. In one of the most famous scenes from the movie, Dory says she is able to speak whale, oscillating her tones to mimic a whale's sonar. A somewhat accurate fact, whales communicate by using sonar waves , which is part of their echolocation abilities, or using distinct sounds to discern surroundings.

Sperm whales, one study says, could have their own language that varies by each clan. Fish also communicate through specific sounds , most commonly fish and invertebrates communicate via clicks and rhythmic noises — including grunts, croaks, and snaps. Poaching, which is different than mere recreational diving , can be a scourge to marine life, especially in the endangered Great Barrier Reef.

Like the Aussie dentist, Dr. Sherman, poachers and divers who usurp marine life for their own purposes can severely damage the thriving ecosystem that is the Reef, notably by bringing in foreign influences and disturbing the natural state of the environment. Just like Dr. Sherman didn't realize he was separating Marlin and Nemo, humans may not realize we're damaging aquatic wildlife.
