When replacing an incandescent bulb with a CFL, pay attention to the lumens, which indicate the amount of light a bulb gives out watts measure the energy use of a bulb, not the light generated.
A watt incandescent bulb can be replaced by an watt CFL because the lumen ouput is approximately the same ; a watt incandescent can be replaced by a watt CFL, both providing about 1, lumens.
The Environmental Defense Web site provides a handy chart comparing the watts and lumens of incandescents versus CFLs, along with further discussion about color temperature.

The flickering usually stops after a few minutes, when the bulbs warm up. Dimmable CFLs are a little more expensive than regular ones, but they won't flicker on a circuit controlled by a dimmer switch. Do not throw CFLs in with regular trash; they contain mercury, which is an environmental toxin. Many building supply centers accept CFLs for recycling. Related Articles. Tip Some CFLs flicker when installed outdoors in below-freezing temperatures. Warning Do not throw CFLs in with regular trash; they contain mercury, which is an environmental toxin.
Anything I should try for testing? I am running this with the fan OFF, it has a separate switch on the wall for the fan and this is all with the fan off.
My brother was having the same issue, also in a ceiling fan. I never did get around to sticking a multimeter in it. I'm going to keep an eye on this thread I have used full size CFLs in 5 different ceiling fans without issue. Ceiling fans are basically giant magnetic motors. It is very possible that, even if the circuits for the fan and the light fixture in the light are separate, that the motor in the fan is inducing noise onto the circuit powering the light fixture.
I have two ceiling fans with CFL's that are currently working just fine. I think this is a classic case of "I went to the doctor and told him it hurt when I did that, and he just told me to stop doing it! That's fine until you can't buy them anymore, and that date is coming quick. But it also means that something is wrong, and when it comes to electrical, I don't want something wrong that I don't know the cause, if I do i can determine the urgency of repair sitting there unresolved.
All home wiring is in parallel. I had a cfl in a ceiling fan also a type A that flickered for about three days before it settled down. I got nothing Ask an electrician? Emailed Hunter Fans, they are sending me a new light fixture. They sent me a new little unit that houses the various switches, replaced that, and now it works great! CFL bulb flickers and buzzes in light fixture???? Do the bulbs make the same noise in a different lamp?
